It is on the way! Once I get the proof (if there are no more mistakes!), it will be going live soon. This book delves into what makes a memorable NPC. Structured towards the horror genre, but can be applied wider. Lets face it, we only remember a few NPCs, this book will tell you why and how to make your NPCs more memorable and get your players to care about them.

More to come.

From Character Choice to Campaign Fuel

Posted by: Keith

The most important test for an occupation kit is simple: does it still matter after character creation?

A player should not choose an occupation, note a few skills, and then never look at the page again. The occupation should continue to produce choices, complications, and useful ideas throughout the campaign.

That is why each kit in Modern Operatives 7–12 includes more than a basic occupation package.

Every occupation has Career Paths, which let players choose a specific angle on the role. A Forensic Pathologist might be an institutional medical examiner, an independent consultant, or an academic researcher. A Maritime Professional could be a ship officer, a commercial diver, a salvage specialist, or a Coast Guard professional. Those paths do not exist just to provide different details. They point the character toward different kinds of stories, contacts, access, and risks.

A Career Path is a quiet campaign decision.

It tells the Keeper where the character came from, which institutions may matter, and what kind of pressure can follow them into the investigation. The institutional medical examiner has access and authority, but also oversight. The independent consultant has freedom, but fewer protections. The academic researcher may have archives, colleagues, and credibility—until their findings become too strange to defend.

The kits also include Talents Spotlight, archetype suggestions, useful items, and roleplaying guidance. These are designed to make the occupation feel active at the table. The Street Paramedic is not only “the character with First Aid.” They are the person who keeps working when everyone else freezes, who notices the impossible injury before anyone else does, and who may be forced to choose between professional protocol and saving someone’s life.

The Keeper Ready Hooks take that one step further.

Each occupation includes four hooks tied directly to the character’s professional world. These can be used as scenario seeds, campaign entry points, complications, or the next thread to pull once an investigation seems finished. A crisis call, an unusual body, an impossible sonar reading, a missing-person search, an object with a dangerous provenance—these are not abstract prompts. They are ways to put the character’s work directly in contact with Mythos trouble.

That means the Keeper does not have to invent a reason for the character to care. The reason is already there.

The best occupation choices do not just describe who a character is. They shape what the campaign notices, where it goes, and what kinds of threats feel personal. A group that includes a paramedic, antiquarian, and maritime professional will naturally find different doors into a mystery than a group built from intelligence officers, journalists, and street fixers.

Both groups can face the Mythos. They just arrive there by different roads.

Kits 7–12 is built to give players stronger roles and give Keepers more ways to make every investigation feel connected to the people trying to survive it.
