Stiquito for Beginners

October 14, 2009: It only took me two days to build it, but let me tell you that Flexinol wire is as thin as a hair! Makes for a fun time to tie knots in it without breaking it. Fortunately, they provided extra in the kit...

The first task is to insert the legs and secure the power bus. The trickiest part is bending the music wire legs to the proper shape. Be prepared to poke a finger or two in the process...It is very springy and sharp.

After attaching the legs, the next step is to attach the Flexinol wires and the power wires. The Flexinol must be knotted then crimped on. The diagrams in the book are really good...just take your time.

The manual controller wasn't that difficult to make. Again, watch out for the sharp bits of wire. The trickiest part is that the diagram showing how to hook up the 9V connector shows the light color wire (black and white image) connected to the middle of the controller. I assumed that it was the red (positive) wire. After looking at the schematic that was provided for troubleshooting, I realized that the negative is connected to the middle of the controller and the positive is connected to the power bus wire on Stiquito.

The Stiquito works suprisingly well. I do think it would work better if it had a bit more weight. All of the legs work like they are supposed to; however, there is a bit of recovery time before a set of legs can be activated again. I wonder if I could make a BEAMish controller for the legs. I am interestied in seeing how the advanced Stiquito will turn out next...
