Construction Notes:
Note that the schematic is drawn from the top side of the chip, a 74AC420 (datasheet). NOT DEAD BUG! So, pin 1 is the top left and pin 20 is the top right. I had to start over once before. JW Joerlich's webpage has an awesome write up on the chip. In addition, you can go to the BEAM Yahoo group (Click Here) for an in depth discussion about it.

I started with the ground wires then the capacitor. I then just started connecting the shorted wires. I finished with the motor connections. I used red wires for positive, black for negative, green for the motors and white for the photodiodes. However, I did use white for the motors to ground (I had some left over).

When I was testing, the dual wheels had too much drag for the two AA batteries I was going to use. So, I removed one tire and it still didn't have enough power to move it. But, it did test well. Covering the individual photodiodes caused the opposite motor to run. I decided to opt for a 9V battery and a 78L05 voltage regulator (datasheet). When looking at the 78L05 from the flat side with the writing, Pin 1 is on the left, 3 is on the right. Pin 1 is the output, 2 is ground and 3 is the input.
